  18. <p>     The bus strike began in Punjab, Pakistan's most populous
  19. province, then spread throughout most of the country, shutting
  20. down public transportation for a week. The drivers were griping
  21. not about low wages but about a new law that imposed severe
  22. punishment for fatal accidents. Following an interpretation of
  23. Shariat, a code of Islamic laws, the guilty driver would be
  24. forced to pay a fine of $8,000 to the family of the deceased
  25. and serve up to 10 years in jail.

  27. <p>     Last week the new government of Prime Minister Mian Nawaz
  28. Sharif, which had promised to institute a legal system based
  29. on Shariat law, decided to seek a new interpretation of the law
  30. from Islamic scholars. Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, a federal
  31. minister, announced that the strikers' "misgivings" would be
  32. remedied by a "simpler and befitting interpretation" of the
  33. law. Nawaz Sharif is learning that imposing Islamic codes is
  34. far tougher than campaigning on the issue.
